Questions About The Swim

What is the water temperature?
Lake Michigan is a large open body of water. Therefore water temperature can vary dramatically from the high 50’s to the low 70’s. The average in the past few years has been 68 to 74 degrees.

Do I need a wetsuit?
No, a wetsuit is not required but water temperatures have historically been between 68-74F on race day making it a wetsuit legal race.  A wetsuit will provide you warm, buoyancy, and make the swim easier.  Wetsuits can be rented from the official wetsuit sponsor of the Chicago Triathlon, Sailfish Wetsuits. Click here for additional information about the rental program.

Is there an Aid Station at the Swim Start?
Yes. There is water available to athletes at the swim start. No Sport Drink.

Will there be a swim warm-up?
No.

Is there a Gear Check at the Swim?
Yes. There will be gear check near the Swim Start beginning at 5:00 am. This area closes at 1 pm and the gear is then transported to the Post Race Party area for pickup.

Can I use any stroke in the swim portion?
Any stroke that allows you to see the buoys and stay on course.

How deep is the water for the swim?
At Monroe Harbor, the water is 6 to 8 feet and the bottom is rocky and sharp. Athletes would need to tread water to start.

If I hang onto the lane lines or buoys , will I be disqualified for doing so?
You may stop and rest during the swim, but you must not interfere with the progress of other swimmers. You may hang onto the guard boats or buoys.
