Questions About The Swim

Lake Michigan is a large open body of water. Therefore water temperature can vary dramatically from the high 50’s to the low 70’s. The average in the past few years has been 68 to 74 degrees.
Do I need a wetsuit?
No, a wetsuit is not required but water temperatures have historically been between 68-74F on race day making it a wetsuit legal race. A wetsuit will provide you with warmth and buoyancy, and make the swim easier. Wetsuits can be rented from one of our various multisport sponsors.

How deep is the water for the swim?
At Monroe Harbor, the water is 6 to 8 feet and the bottom is rocky and sharp. Athletes will tread water prior to the start.
If I hang onto the lane lines or buoys , will I be disqualified for doing so?
You may stop and rest during the swim, but you must not interfere with the progress of other swimmers. You may hang onto the guard boats or buoys.
