Important Event Update
In advance of tomorrow’s Chicago Triathlon, participants now have two options to consider in regard to the swim portion of the event:
1. Participate in a 750 Meter Swim
Participants may elect to swim at 750 meter course in tomorrow’s triathlon. The 1,500 meter swim course will not be offered.
Sustained easterly winds continue to impact Monroe Harbor (site of tomorrow’s Chicago Triathlon Swim Course), consequently, event staff are unable to place buoys along the entirety of the course. Those efforts will now begin early Sunday morning. As a precaution, the International distance swim course will likely be condensed from the original 1,500 to 750 meters.
International distance swimmers should plan to complete a Sprint distance Swim Course, then continue onto the full 40K Bike and 10K Run Courses, accordingly. The Swim Course Start and Finish areas will remain unchanged; swimmers begin at Balbo Avenue and Lake Shore Drive and conclude near the Chicago Yacht Club. All wave assignments and start times for Sunday participants remain unchanged.
2. Participate in a Duathlon
Sprint or International distance participants who do not wish to participate in the swim portion have the option to participate in a duathlon (run-bike-run) instead.
Those interested in this format will continue to report to the Swim Course Start for their original start time and wave designation. There is no need to alert event staff of this decision. Participants will begin the event in time trial format from the Swim Start and run .75 miles into Transition before beginning their respective bike portion. Duathletes will not be eligible for awards as they are scored separately from triathletes.
Triple Challenge participants who opt-out of the swim will not be eligible for Triple awards, although they will be allowed to race both events.
Event Staff will continue to monitor the weather and lake conditions overnight, in conjunction with the Chicago Park District and Chicago Fire Department. In the event that swim conditions worsen, the swim portion will be cancelled and all participants will compete in the duathlon.
Participants are asked to be prepared by packing the appropriate gear and advised to monitor the Chicago Triathlon Facebook page and listen for announcements in Transition. The same Transition schedules remain in effect, opening at 4:00 AM for both distances.
Thank you for your patience as we work to provide the best possible race experience for participants of all abilities. The safety and security of our athletes is, was and always will be of paramount importance to our staff.
